Introduction
The UK's carbon reduction targets are looming, and pressures from planning authorities are mounting on developers to deliver truly sustainable projects. But do we know what good looks like? And if so, do we have the skills, techniques, and models to deliver it?
Kier Construction is at the forefront of tackling carbon demands on behalf of our clients.
In April 2024, we brought together developers and supply chain partners at the Langham Hotel in London to discuss how the industry should adapt its approach to fulfil new carbon requirements, while still meeting the capital’s development needs.
There’s an increasing need for conversations and collective thinking on how we deliver developments in a low carbon way for our clients. We’re also seeing this reflected in what the local planning teams are challenging us with.
We take all necessary steps to drive carbon reduction on all our projects. We design a product to suit a tenant, or we target a tenant to suit the product. We achieved better operational carbon with having no cooling in the Affordable Housing scheme at White City (with Kier Construction) with shutters designed to block the sun like in Europe.
Kier has exemplar engineering and technical expertise, enabled by a breadth of built environment skills and experience. With our extensive in-house design and engineering capabilities we're able to meet society's growing needs for low carbon solutions and reduced asset lifetime costs through the application of modern methods and digital technologies.
Kier's design and engineering business includes specialist mechanical and electrical engineering teams, ground and temporary works as well as specialist modern methods and digital construction teams, plus decarbonisation engineers. By bringing these capabilities together we can quickly advise clients on optimal solutions to meet their needs now and in the future.
